When we stated in our Future Sign: Data Dimension that “as we create a data trail, expect our records of the past to not only be more accurate, but also realistic”, we never expect anything like this:

Etsy, the online D.I.Y. marketplace, has had quite and impressive record of their own past, and it’s been realistically rendered in hand-knitted scarf form. Designer Natalie Rachel has created a pair of hand-made scarves inspired by the company’s data infographics. One is a pie graph that details the categories of items listed and in relation to the infinite scarf, the other, a comparative study of the growth of new members and the number of items sold over time.
Etsy, which attracts a bevy of skilled, indie designers, indie craftsman and indie buyers, has had a wildly successful rise since launching in 2005, making them the hand-made alternative to e-commerce sites like eBay and Amazon.

Keeping warm and showing your nerdy side this winter?
That’s data we can get behind.
