At some point during your youth, you were accosted (most likely by the matriarch of your family), with the old adage “if you keep making that face, it’s going to stay like that”. While the threats were surely empty (right…..right?), there was still a sense of childlike disbelief that allowed a sliver of truth to that reality to linger. And so with that in mind, you mugged impossibly silly faces at your own peril. But in Japan, Nike wanted to take that idea to the next level.

To promote their Nike Free Run + sneaker, Nike launched a contest for Japanese residents called Free Face that asks you to attach your webcam to the site and sport your meanest, or stupidest mug, while watching the sneaker mock your facial movements. The faces are uploaded and voted on by the public. The face with the highest votes wins a Nike ID Gift Card.

To demonstrate the lightness and flexibility of the sneaker, the Nike Free Run + twists, turns and contorts itself, with nary a struggle. And from the looks of it that must be some flexible kick, no?

Jim Carrey would have a field day.
